Horticulture Services Centre

The Horticulture Services Centre (HSC) of Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) promote the development of the horticulture industry in Singapore. It provides technical advice and support, consultancy and trade facilitation services to those involved in the production and trade of vegetables, foodcrops, orchid, ornamental plants and aquatic plants in Singapore and in the region.




Services offered

Technology and product development services
  • The HSC conducts R&D and provides advisory services to develop farming systems, protocols on good agricultural practices (including protected cultivation and integrated pest management systems) and post-harvest management operations. It develops methods for soil improvement in vegetable farms to ensure sustainable soil fertility. It conducts studies to help farmers solve pest and disease problems with an emphasis towards safer methods. It evaluates new varieties of orchids and leafy vegetables and introduces them to the local farmers and markets.

  • Transfer of technical know-how on vegetable production and horticulture technology through publications, training and consultancy to both local and foreign growers, as well as horticulture-related industries in the region, to develop overseas food production projects.
 


Laboratory and field services
  • Orchid Seed Pod Service: HSC assists the orchid industry to develop their own new varieties by germinating the seeds for the growers and returning the plantlets to them. To apply for the Orchid Seed Pod Service, please proceed to the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory at HSC to fill in the Seedpod application form and submit the seedpod/s.

  • Tissue Culture of orchids and ornamental plants (like staghorn ferns, pitcher plants, alocasias, venus fly trap plantlets, etc). To apply for the Tissue Culture of Orchids and Ornamental Plants Service, please proceed to the Plant Biotechnology Lab to fill in the Tissue Culture application form and submit the plant/s.

  • Technical examination of new plant varieties submitted for Plant Varieties Protection. For more information, click here.
  • Advisory services to help vegetable farms achieve the Good Agricultural Practices for Vegetable Farming (GAP-VF) status. For more information, click here.
  • Fruit tree grafting
 

Training courses
  • Training courses on Plant Tissue Culture, Field Production of Orchids and Soil Cultivation of Leafy Vegetables.
  • Training of teachers who are planning to introduce agriculture in their schools as part of their life sciences programme.
  • Regional training courses to ASEAN member countries on postharvest handling technology and tissue culturing.
  • Other horticulture courses can also be customised and conducted upon request
