Testing of Animal Pathogens and Biologics

The animal health laboratory services arm of the AVA's Animal and Plant Health Centre has a professional team of veterinarians, microbiologists, molecular biologists and laboratory technologists specialising in Aquatic Animal Health, Bacteriology, Pathology and Virology. We aim to maintain our country's animal disease-free status, which facilitates Singapore's international trade, protects the health of local animal populations and indirectly safeguards human health.

Services

The animal health laboratory services are sought by local and overseas farmers, private pet owners, private veterinary practitioners, as well as local establishments such as the Singapore Zoological Gardens, the Jurong Birdpark, the Singapore Turf Club and vaccine manufacturing companies.

Our services include:
  • Diagnostic support for national surveillance programmes: We offer diagnostic support for AVA's national surveillance programmes for various notifiable animal and zoonotic pathogens, such as:
    • rabies virus
    • 'bird flu' virus (avian influenza virus)
    • Nipah virus
    • Salmonella Enteritidis
  • Close monitoring of important aquatic pathogens such as viral nervous necrosis virus, iridoviruses, whitespot syndrome virus and Streptococcus iniae in valuable food fish and shellfish. We also run programmes to investigate significant health-related problems in aquaculture.
  • Diagnosis of animal diseases: We provide services for the diagnosis of animal diseases through laboratory testing, including determination of antibiotic susceptibility profiles of bacterial pathogens. We also offer disease investigation and professional consultation services for animal and fish farms.
  • Quality control testing of veterinary biologics. For information on possession and import/export of veterinary biologics, click here.
  • Diagnostic support for issuance of export health certificates: To support issuance of export health certificates we conduct tests for a variety of animals and fish, such as serological tests for Brucella canis, Leptospira canicola, Erhlichia canis and equine infectious anaemia, detection of koi herpesvirus and spring viraemia of carp virus, etc.

Submission forms

Specimens submitted to the APHC must be accompanied by the appropriate sample submission form:

  1. Submission Form for Aquatic Animals
  2. Submission Form for Companion Animals
  3. Submission Form for Livestock / Exotic Animals and Birds
  4. Submission Form for Miscellaneous Specimens (Veterinary)
  5. Submission Form for Veterinary Vaccines
In addition to the sample submission form, animal carcasses submitted to the APHC must be accompanied by the following, whichever is appropriate:

  2. Post-Mortem Examination Letter of Authorisation

Forms and appropriate Annexes are also available as hard copies from the APHC.

Please note that samples with incomplete or illegible forms may be rejected.

When large numbers of specimens are being submitted, Annex A or a separate list should be used. Please ensure that specimen identities are clearly printed on the list and match the labels on samples. Samples that are not listed may be rejected.

Sample submission

Due to risks to transport and laboratory personnel, please DO NOT send specimens in:

  • Syringes, with or without needles. Needles may cause injury while specimens in syringes without needles are prone to leakage.
  • Glass containers of any kind.
  • Wet ice in plastic bags. Please use sturdy insulated boxes for wet ice or cold packs instead.

Please refer to our service booklet for detailed instructions.

Test reports

Performance standards

A test report will be issued within 10 days from the date of receipt of sample(s). In cases where results, by nature of the test method, take longer than 10 days to obtain, a preliminary report will be issued within 10 days, where appropriate. Turn-around times are indicated here.

Please indicate on the submission form the preferred manner of receiving reports: by fax, mail or personal collection at APHC. If there is no indication, reports will be sent by FAX ONLY.

For reasons of confidentiality, reports will be sent only to the party being billed for the examination, except where a notifiable disease under the Animal and Birds Act is diagnosed, in which case, the relevant authorities will be notified.

Every report sent by fax from the APHC is documented with a confirmation of successful fax transmission. For customer-friendliness, one subsequent request for a 're-faxed' copy will be allowed gratis. After that, each additional request for a faxed copy will be charged an administrative fee of S$9.45 (inclusive of GST).

For a claim of unsuccessful mail delivery of a report, one CERTIFIED TRUE COPY can be issued gratis. The customer is encouraged to collect this report at the APHC as any subsequent request for a copy of the report will be charged the administrative fee of S$9.45 (inclusive of GST).

Payment for all laboratory services is by NETS, GIRO or cashcard ONLY.
