Licensing of Veterinarians

To practise veterinary medicine in Singapore, the applicant needs to apply for a veterinary licence from the licensing authority, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA).

It takes an estimated 10 to 14 working days to process an application that is complete and in order.




Requirements of issuance of licence

The issuance of this licence is subject to the following requirements:
  1. The applicant must hold a recognised degree in veterinary medicine. As a guide, degrees recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), United Kingdom and veterinary degrees from US veterinary schools that are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), are generally acceptable.

    The application for a licence must be made by the applicant and be endorsed by the veterinary practice he/she is intending to work for in Singapore. Contact details in Singapore (such as residential address, practice address and contact telephone numbers) should be provided in the application.

  2. At the time of application, the following documents must be presented:

    1. A certified true copy of the applicant's qualification certificate. Degrees which are in a foreign language must be officially translated.

    2. A reference letter from the veterinary licensing authority in the applicant's country of residence and practice attesting to the applicant's character and good standing.

    3. Applicant's curriculum vitae (including personal particulars, photograph and history of past employment).

  3. An interview by AVA. (The original qualification certificate must be presented for verification at this stage)
 

Licensing conditions

The licence issued is subject to the following conditions that the licensee:
  1. Must comply fully with the Code of Ethics for Veterinary surgeons and such amendments that may come into effect from time to time. The Code of Ethics aims to assure the community the best service of which veterinary surgeons are capable and to promote co-operation within the ranks of professionals.
  2. Is required to work with an existing veterinary centre in Singapore in the first year after obtaining a licence to gain local experience.
