Import, Export and Transshipment of Irradiated Food

Irradiated food refers to food treated with ionizing radiation. It is important that such food is properly irradiated and is clearly labelled for consumers' information.




Statutory requirement for the import of irradiated food

Under regulation 38 of the Singapore Food Regulations, a licence is required for the import of irradiated food.

 


Criteria for approval of irradiated food licence

Approval of irradiated food licence would be granted if the following conditions are satisfied:
  1. Submission of completed irradiated food licence application form
  2. Submission of Certificate of Irradiation from the regulatory authority of the manufacturing country indicating
    1. the type of food,
    2. brand name,
    3. quantity,
    4. batch number,
    5. country of origin,
    6. type of treatment given
    7. dosage,
    8. name of institution that carried out the irradiation treatment,
    9. certifying that the ionizing radiation has been conducted in accordance with the Codex Recommended International Code of Practice For the Operation of Radiation Facilities Used For the Treatment of Foods, and
    10. that such irradiated food meets the Codex Standards for Irradiated foods.
 


Additional labelling requirements for irradiated food

In addition to the basic labelling information required under the Food Regulations, irradiated food is to be labelled with one of the following statements:

"TREATED WITH IONIZING IRRADIATION" or "IRRADIATED (here insert the name of the food)".

 


Fees

The licence fee is S$95.00 per annum.

Payment can be made by cheque (crossed) to Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority.

 


Application for irradiated food licence

Applicants for the irradiated food licence should submit the completed application form together with the Certificate of Irradiation, via mail, fax or e-mail to AVA. For the Irradiated Food Licence Application Form, please click here.

 


Updating/renewal/termination of licence

Licensees are required to inform AVA of any changes to the licensee and product details, as well as their intention to renew or terminate their irradiated food licence, in writing.
