- The Agri-food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) would like to remind the public that importation of meat products requires a licence and permit from the AVA. However, the AVA recognises that many travellers would like to bring home meat products for personal consumption and not for commercial sale. Therefore, the AVA has made the following exemptions:
- Each person can bring in a total quantity of 5 kg of meat which can include beef, mutton, pork or poultry products from permitted countries. (Please see attached list for further details on Discretion for Hand-Carried Goods). As such, meat from some countries is not part of this exemption. For instance, beef from Britain is prohibited and only poultry is allowed from Malaysia and Thailand. Pork Rice Dumplings (Bak Chang) from Malaysia is not allowed.
- The AVA advises travellers to declare the meat products brought in when in doubt. Travellers will be given the opportunity to surrender products which are not allowed or which exceed the allowed quantity. Surrendered products will be destroyed.
- If any disallowed products are not declared, the travellers may be liable to a penalty. Under the Wholesome Meat and Fish Act, the penalty for import of meat or fish products without a licence is a fine of up to $50,000 or jail of 2 years or both.
- The public can call the AVA’s Hotline at 1800-2262250 if they need clarification. Alternatively, they can visit our website: http://www.ava.gov.sg for details on regulations involving import of meat and fish for personal consumption under our Frequently Asked Questions section.
