General Information

Application of pesticides for the commercial cultivation of plants must be carried out or supervised by a pesticide operator certified by AVA. This is to encourage good agricultural practices in the use of pesticides in the farming of ornamental plants and production of pesticide-safe fresh fruits and vegetables.

The owner or an employee of a commercial farm producing fruit crops, vegetable crops or ornamental plants for sale may apply to be certified as a pesticide operator. You can find the Guidelines of Pesticide Operator’s Certification.

You can submit the completed Application Form for Pesticide Operator’s Certificate to AVA by fax or post.

Certified pesticide operators must be able to:

  • read and understand labels of pesticide products
  • know safe usage of pesticides to protect pesticide users and the environment against the pesticide's side-effects

Requirements for Certification of Pesticide Operators

The pesticide operator certification is a vocational certification for individuals.

The applicant must be:

  • 18 years of age and above
  • fit and can be entrusted to use pesticides safely
  • able to read and understand instructions on a pesticide label

To be issued a Pesticide Operator’s Certificate, the applicant will have to:

  • sit for and pass the written (multiple choice) AVA pesticide operator proficiency test
  • successfully undergo a medical examination

This certificate is valid for 3 years and is renewable before its expiry date. To renew the certificate, the pesticide operator will have to re-sit and pass the proficiency test and undergo a successful medical examination again.
