Safe Landing of Animals:
New Guidelines and Training for Air Cargo Service Providers
by air. AVA also provides training to ground handling agents to help them
comply new requirements.
AVA has been working closely with air cargo service providers – SATS Ltd and DNATA Singapore Pte Ltd – on the development of the new Guidelines for the Designation of Animal Holding Room for Ground Handling Agents.
- Standard operating procedures on keeping the rooms clean.
- Layout and design of the rooms.
- Quarantine protocol.
To help ground handling agents familiarise themselves with the guidelines, AVA organised a series half-day training sessions from in 2014 and January 2015. Participants also learned more about the concepts of animal quarantine, as well as ways to look out for signs of illnesses in the animals. In addition, basic skills in animal care and handling, along with ‘live’ demonstrations of the safe and proper methods to handle dogs and cats were covered.
Response from participants has been very positive and encouraging. Not only did they show genuine interest by seeking clarification from AVA officers, they also commented that they gained a better understanding of topics covered. Furthermore, they requested for AVA to conduct additional sessions as part of the companies’ internal training programme.
