Plant Health Laboratory Services

The Plant Health Laboratory Services arm of the opens in a new windowAnimal and Plant Health Centre at AVA acts as the national authority on plant health. It specialises in these disciplines:

  • Plant Mycology
  • Plant Virology
  • Nematology
  • Entomology
  • Soil Science 

It also provides analytical and diagnostic services for the identification of plant pests, diseases and nutrition problems for plants in Singapore.

The Integrated Pest Management Unit carries out surveillance programmes at these areas to safeguard Singapore’s plant health:

  • local vegetable and orchid farms
  • ornamental nurseries
  • public shrubs and trees

Members under the plant health surveillance network such as farms and the National Parks Board are provided with monthly plant pest alerts to manage impeding outbreaks.

Nutrient Analysis

Application Process & Sample Submission

Step 1: Select Sample for Analysis

Poorly selected specimens may result in an inaccurate diagnosis or inappropriate control recommendation. Refer to the opens in a new windowService Booklet for detailed guidelines and instructions on sample submission.

Step 2: Complete Application Form

Complete the application form and the worksheet for the selection of tests provided.

Download and complete the opens in a new windowApplication form for Plant Health Laboratory Services or apply online through the opens in a new windowInspection & Laboratory e-Services. Please note that you will have to log in to the e-Service and locate the specific Plant Health Laboratory Service.

Step 3: Submit Samples with Application Form

Submit the samples, together with the completed application form or the e-Service acknowledgement slip to the opens in a new windowAnimal and Plant Health Centre soon after collection. If you are unable to submit immediately, keep the samples cool (refrigerated at 5 to 10oC).

You can also mail or courier the samples in a sturdy box (to prevent crushing) with the completed application form.

Sample Submission from Overseas (Including Malaysia)

AVA regulates the import of plants and plant products, biological control agents, soil and organic fertilisers in Singapore. The Quarantine & Inspection Group will levy an S$11 import fee for the foreign samples from each application. You will be billed for the import permit and the laboratory analysis.

You have to also follow the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Packaging Instruction 650 when you are sending plant samples from overseas.You can find more information on postal packages regulations atopens in a new window IATA.

Test Reports

Test results will be ready within 7 to 14 days depending on the test types. There might be exceptional cases, e.g.:

  • incubation tests require more than 14 days to complete
  • further confirmation of delay due to equipment breakdown

You will be informed if results will not be ready within 14 days. If payment has not been made, an invoice will be sent once the laboratory report is ready. The report will be released only upon full payment for services.

For customers using our Inspection & Laboratory e-Services, results can be viewed online upon payment. The official report will be sent to you based on your preferred method of receipt.

For confidentiality reasons, reports will be sent only to the party being billed for the examination, unless it is a notifiable disease, where the relevant authorities will be notified.
